This morning 4/14/2010 on a Jamaica-bound F train at about 7:15am a man got on at Roosevelt Ave and sat down next to a woman who had been sleeping since midtown. He was trying to lay his arm touching hers. I was watching him and he started staring at me, then he put his hands down his pants for about 15 seconds. When I called the 212-267-rape hotline just now (10:30am) to report what he had been doing to the woman, the operator who answered the call told me that if the woman was an adult she has to report it herself. I called right back to add that he had put his hands down his pants in front of everyone, and she said the same thing again, in the same cold tone, and did not try to soothe me at all. She said that if I really wanted to report it I could go to some office at the Union Turnpike station. The bottom line is that I was exposed to sexual misconduct, and when I sought help there was none. The next time I’m in Queens I’ll go to look for the place the operator told me to look for, but the way that woman handled my call was so harmful. I feel more traumatized now than I did before.
